Beginning September 1, 2025, the EU will prohibit the use of both HEMA and TPO in nail products. This decision comes alongside growing global awareness of HEMA-related allergies among nail techs and clients alike.

What Are HEMA and TPO?

HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate):

A common monomer used in gels for strong adhesion, durability, and a smooth finish.

Risks: Known as one of the top allergens in nail products, it can trigger contact dermatitis, eczema, and swelling of the skin.

TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide):

A photoinitiator that enables gel products to cure quickly under UV/LED lamps.

Risks & Regulations: Banned in the EU from September 1, 2025 due to concerns over skin irritation, immune sensitization, and potential carcinogenic effects if inhaled.

Should You Avoid HEMA/TPO Products?

If you’ve had allergic reactions or are prone to skin sensitivities, absolutely.

DIY users/home applications benefit most from HEMA-free gels since accidental skin contact is common.

If you’ve never had an issue, there’s no immediate danger, but this shift is a good reminder to review your product choices and make changes if you prefer a safer option.

Adhesion & Strength: Without HEMA, wear time and toughness may vary by brand.

Curing Time: Without TPO, some formulas may cure slower or differently.
